Merchants Crossing is a collection of vacant commercial buildings and parcels in the River’s Edge District. The site is just a 5 minute walking distance from downtown and is situated on the banks of the Kalamazoo River. Originally home to the Merchants Publishing business, the site has housed numerous businesses over the years, before falling into disrepair, vacancy, and eventually tax foreclosure in 2014 and 2015. Merchants Crossing currently has 4 permanent structures, 2 of which are older, solid brick buildings and the rest are open sheet metal and garage style structures. The plan is to keep the brick buildings and to demolish the remaining structures which are blighted and no longer useful. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has worked to remediate contamination from the various businesses that have existed on the site, and have demolished one of the blighted buildings. Further remediation will take place in 2016, once the demolition work is completed.
The Kalamazoo County Land Bank will be working with DLZ Environmental to complete demolition work at the site throughout the spring and summer of 2016. There will be a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) issued in late summer/fall of 2016.
For those interested in submitting an RFQ, please contact the Land Bank at the email address (in the right sidebar) to be added to the email list; we will email interested parties as more information on the RFQ process is released. For general inquiries, please call 269-216-9667.
